The season is timely, as the international bestselling author and national treasure has just become one of 90 Great Britons to be celebrated as part of a major portrait to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday.

When asked to name her favourite pick of the True Entertainment collection, Barbara said: “They’re all good, it’s hard to choose!”

But Barbara settled on Act of Will“It’s a little bit autobiographical, it’s somewhat about my parents’ marriage and me, so Act of Will I love, it is really personal.”

She continues: “During Act of Will I fell in love with Anthony Hopkins, he’s the nicest possible person to meet.”

Barbara published her first novel, A Woman of Substance, in 1979. It went from bestseller to super seller within its first year and stayed on the New York Times’ list for 55 weeks. It is ranked in the top ten bestselling works of fiction of all time with more than 32 million copies sold.

The iconic film adaptation starring Jenny Seagrove garnered Channel 4 some of the highest audience figures the channel has ever received when it aired in Jan 1985.

Barbara describes the leading character, Emma Harte, as “a woman who was strong, independent, driven, ambitious, courageous – willing to go out and put herself on the line and do something. I created a woman who wanted to conquer the world.”
