Gemfields, the world’s leading supplier of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones, launches exclusive ruby & emerald London experience

Revered and desired throughout history, rubies and emeralds have long since been shrouded in mystery.  In order to help increase understanding of these beautiful, rare gemstones, Gemfields is hosting its first combined Ruby and Emerald Masterclass in London, this month.

The Masterclass is a ground-breaking educational experience, set to de-mystify and therefore increase appreciation of rubies and emeralds, the former of which is known as the ‘King of Gemstones’.

As the world’s leading supplier of precious, responsibly sourced coloured gemstones, Gemfields is uniquely placed to host this most comprehensive learning experience, developed in conjunction with the renowned gemstone and jewellery expert Joanna Hardy.  Joanna has more than 30 years’ experience working in the industry and has authored a number of books including two most recent entitled Ruby and Emerald (Thames & Hudson).

Launched in 2016 at the Hong Kong Gem and Jewellery Fair, the Gemfields Masterclass has travelled the world and is delivered at three different levels: Basic, Fundamental and Advanced.

The Masterclass covers the geology, geographic origin, history, qualities and classification of rubies and emeralds as well as providing hands-on experiential skills.

Gemfields CEO Sean Gilbertson states: “As leaders in the industry and pioneers of innovation, the Masterclass has toured around Europe, India, US and Hong Kong.  Our goal is to instil an in-depth and up-to-date understanding of coloured gemstones from some of the industry’s most admired and passionate experts.”

“The UK Masterclass comes at an important time, building on consumers’ interest in sustainable coloured gemstones and a growing demand in understanding where and the how they have been mined.  We know that consumers are seeking out brands with integrity, ones that can give them reassurance when buying a piece of jewellery and the stones they fall in love with have a responsible legacy.

Joanna Hardy adds: “Gemstones are nature’s marvels, formed billions of years ago deep in the earth’s crust.  Each emerald and ruby is completely unique and is much rarer than a diamond.

“There has been a lot of education when it comes to white diamonds which has trickled down to the consumer.  At the moment, people are not as familiar with colour on that scale but now, with the support of Gemfields and its commitment to education, masterclasses like these are helping to educate others about the wonderful and enthralling world of coloured gemstones and gain a deeper appreciation.”
