A Woman of Substance is the brand-new eight-part drama for Channel 4, reimagining Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE’s classic rags-to-riches story for a contemporary audience. First adapted by Channel 4 more than 40 years ago – when it became the Channel’s biggest ever drama and received two Emmy nominations – the new series, set and filmed in Yorkshire, follows Emma Harte, an ambitious housemaid in Yorkshire in 1911 whose extraordinary drive propels her from poverty to becoming one of the most powerful women in the world.

Hosted by the Chancellor of the Exchequer, the event honoured Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE, the Leeds-born author whose international bestselling novels have earned her a place among the most influential British writers of the 20th and 21st centuries. It also recognised the creative vision behind bringing this iconic story to the screen, while reflecting on the themes of ambition, determination and enterprise at the heart of A Woman of Substance — themes that continue to resonate strongly with audiences today.

The reception also brought together women from across television and the wider creative industries, recognising the talent, leadership and breadth of experience represented the UK’s creative industries. Women make up close to half of the UK workforce, but are consistently under‑represented in senior leadership across the creative and cultural industries, highlighting the importance of diversity and representation both on and off screen, and the role organisations such as Channel 4 play in championing inclusive storytelling, nurturing creative talent and ensuring the UK’s creative industries reflect the audiences they serve.

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves said:

“Women are driving the global success of Britain’s creative industries – in studios, on stage, and in business.

As the first female Chancellor I am committed to backing that talent, breaking down barriers to opportunity and ensuring the sector continues to create good jobs and deliver for working people across the country.”

Priya Dogra, Chief Executive of Channel 4, said:

Channel 4 exists to tell stories that challenge, represent and reflect the whole of the UK. A Woman of Substance, based on the iconic novel by Barbara Taylor Bradford, brings that mission to life – a distinctive British drama, rooted in Yorkshire and resonating with audiences across the country. We’re delighted to see it recognised at this reception.

H.E. Vicki Downey, Trustee of The Barbara Taylor Bradford Trust, said:

“We are honoured to see A Woman of Substance recognised in such a distinguished setting. Barbara Taylor Bradford’s writing has always championed the strength, ambition and determination of women forging their own path, themes that remain as relevant today as ever. As a proud Yorkshirewoman, Barbara would have been especially pleased to see this celebration hosted by the UK’s first female Chancellor, Rachel Reeves, MP for Leeds West, where Barbara spent her formative years. The Trust is delighted to see her work recognised in a way that continues to inspire and resonate with readers and audiences alike.”

Guests included The Lord Mayor of Leeds, local dignitaries, Channel 4 executives, and the writers of the new adaptation of A Woman of Substance, due to be broadcast next month (March 2026).

Barbara Taylor Bradford’s connection to Armley Library is deeply personal. As a young reader, she spent countless hours there, so devoted that she famously held two library cards to double her borrowing limit. It was in these walls that her gift for storytelling was nurtured, laying the foundation for Barbara Taylor Bradford’s remarkable career.

Born and raised in Leeds, Barbara Taylor left school at 15 for the typing pool at the Yorkshire Evening Post. At 16, she became a reporter on the paper and, at 18, its first Woman’s Editor. Aged 20, she moved to London and became a columnist and editor on Fleet Street. She later met and married Robert Bradford, a Hollywood film 2

producer. The couple made their home in Manhattan, while she maintained close ties to the UK, returning frequently throughout her life.

Barbara Taylor Bradford’s first novel, A Woman of Substance, was published in 1979. The book tells the story of Emma Harte and the machinations and intrigue of a family retail empire. A Woman of Substance took the world by storm, rising from bestseller to super-seller within its first year and remaining on the New York Times list for 43 weeks. It is ranked in the top ten bestselling works of fiction of all time with more than 32 million copies sold to date.

Described as the ‘grand dame of blockbusters’, ‘Queen of the family saga genre’ , Barbara wrote 40 novels during her lifetime, all international bestsellers. 92 million copies of Barbara Taylor Bradford books have been sold to date, published in 40 languages and in more than 90 countries.

The items will tour Doyle’s galleries in Palm Beach and Beverly Hills before being displayed for public exhibition at Doyle New York beginning May 3, noon-5pm. A live auction will be held there on Wednesday, May 7, and will also be available for online bidding and via telephone.

During her life, Barbara Taylor Bradford wrote 40 novels, selling over 92 million copies worldwide. Her contributions to literature and journalism earned her numerous accolades on both sides of the Atlantic, including an OBE from Queen Elizabeth II for services to literature and The Lifetime Platinum Bestseller

Award from Nieslen, an award only given to a very small number of authors who have achieved lifetime sales of over five million copies in the UK. She was also the first ambassador for Women in Journalism and received honorary doctorates from five universities. Ten of Barbara’s novels have been adapted into successful television miniseries, including the Emmy-nominated A Woman of Substance. Now, 40 years after it first aired, the story is being adapted once again for a new global TV audience.

Notable lots include a selection of Barbara Taylor Bradford’s jewellery, together with first edition copies of A Woman of Substance. Other auction highlights include items that highlight the cultural landscape she inhabited, such as signed first copies of Paul Robeson and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher’s memoirs and two signed photographs of Sir Anthony Hopkins, an actor who starred in Barbara Taylor Bradford’s To Be The Best miniseries. The sale also features some of the entertaining and dinner services she and Bob would often use for the dinner parties she was fêted for hosting, many of which counted upon the highest ranks of the literary and political intelligentsia as guests.

A lifelong devotee of the arts, Bradford’s life was as glamorous as the women in her novels. She met royalty and was friends with presidents and Prime Ministers, musicians, film directors, and stars from the stage and screen. Married for 55 years to Robert Bradford, a celebrated film and television producer, she remained immersed in storytelling across mediums. The couple enjoyed holidays in France, Geneva, Capri, and in the Caribbean islands, and they amassed a collection of art, jewellery, porcelain, Art Deco and Biedermeier furniture, silverware, first edition books, and Winston Churchill memorabilia.
The background to Emma Harte’s rags-to-riches rise is the tale of women through the 20th century, as Emma defies the expectations of her society, fearlessly challenging the roles she’s given, smashing glass ceilings, and never, ever deviating from her masterplan: Get to the top. Whatever it takes.

A housemaid-turned-mogul, daughter, mother, lover, fighter and a 20th century feminist icon who refused to know her ‘place’, Emma Harte returns to Channel 4 once again to delight and scandalise audiences.

Ollie Madden, Director of Film4 and Channel 4 Drama, adds: “Emma Harte’s superpower is weaponizing the degree to which men underestimate her. Watching her do that through the decades, experiencing her epic journey from housemaid to mogul, promises to be as thrillingly entertaining as it is fiercely relevant. We couldn’t be more excited to bring Barbara Taylor Bradford’s classic creation to life again via the brilliance of Katherine Jakeways and Roanne Bardsley’s sparkling scripts, alongside our trusted partners at The Forge.”

Beth Willis, Executive Producer at The Forge, says: “Katherine’s delicious, funny and observant writing is a joy to read – and in her and Roanne Bardsley’s brilliant hands Emma Harte is as fabulous as ever. A Woman of Substance is an all-you-can-eat-banquet of drama for contemporary audiences who – like Emma Harte – want it all.’”

An 8×60” drama series by The Forge Entertainment, Beth Willis, Joe Innes and Katherine Jakeways are the executive producers. Roanne Bardsley is Co-Executive Producer. Charlie Palmer (Extraordinary, Agatha Raisin) is producer and John Hardwick (The Buccaneers, One Day, The A Word) will direct.

Vicki Downey, Trustee of The Barbara Taylor Bradford Trust, says: “It was always Barbara’s dream to see A Woman of Substance reimagined, as this book – along with her 39 others – features compelling plot lines, which are perfect for television drama. In many ways, A Woman of Substance was one of the first female empowerment novels, portraying a woman driven not by love or the pursuit of it, but by her determination to gain power, protect and provide for others, and, above all, to succeed. It is a classic of its genre.”

Barbara was simply remarkable: intelligent, compassionate, smart, driven, talented and extremely perceptive. Her mind was like a machine, her imagination was incredible, and she was always quick off the mark. We talked all the time: from conversations about a character or current plot, something she’d read in the UK papers, the latest royals going ons, or new book ideas – she had at least six new novel ideas safely tucked away in a shoebox in her desk drawer at any one time.

She is often described as a storyteller of substance, and she truly was. Barbara had a unique ability to turn even the mundane into magic. She could make a routine trip to the dentist as gripping as one of her plot lines. She would call me, either “cutting to the chase” – one of her favourite phrases, though she rarely did – or spend more than an hour chatting. We would discuss everything, from conversations about a character or current plot, something she’d read in the UK papers and the latest royals going ons. Barbara always had incredible stories. One of my favourites was from her time as a journalist on The London American in the 1960s. Determined to profile a jet pilot, she convinced the General at RAF Lakenheath to let her accompany a pilot in an F-100 Super Sabre Supersonic Jet. Dressed in full flight uniform, she soared into the sky and heard the sonic boom. She became one of the first civilian women to break the sound barrier—and had the picture to prove it!

Over the years, I accompanied Barbara to countless interviews and events – too many to count. Book signings were always busy, queues were guaranteed. Fans would travel from afar, bringing old copies of her novels for her to sign while buying the latest release. On one occasion, an American lady asked her to sign her copy of A Woman of Substance…..with a bullet hole in it. Barbara was alarmed, asked what had happened, and the lady said her husband shot the book as she was reading it so much!

Her books became like bibles to many. Readers would frequently tell her their story and cite how her books changed their lives: “It inspired me to set up a business”, “It helped me through some dark times” or “It gave me courage to change my career”. Their lives forever altered by the stories she wrote.

Wherever she was in the world, we got stopped. On flights, air stewardesses would ask her all about her writing, while in a department store shoppers wanted to chat and talk about the most recent BTB book they’d just read, when having Afternoon Tea at The Dorchester (her favourite London hotel), guests would politely ask for a picture. Barbara always says yes. “If they have spent their money on one of my books, it is the least I can do to say thank you,” she’d say.

I saw Barbara at her most vulnerable when her beloved husband of 55 years, Bob died. She asked me to come to New York and stay with her, help manage the media, and simply be there. It was such a heartbreaking time, their love for each other was remarkable, they were two peas in a pod. Despite her immense grief, Barbara continued to write bestseller while managing Bob’s businesses, honouring his wish that she keeps going.

I sometimes used to say to Barbara she was the original woman of substance. She’d brush off the compliment, and move on with the next meeting, interview, or chapter of her book without fuss. While she encountered many remarkable women, Barbara rarely used the term she made famous. To Barbara, being A Woman of Substance was a title reserved for someone truly extraordinary. She once described the late Queen Elizabeth II as a “Statewoman of Substance”, truly loved and held with such affection across the whole world because she stood for all that is good and honourable. In many ways, I feel the same about Barbara.

Words were her business, and she knew words had the power to change lives. That’s why she was passionate about her work for National Literacy Trust in the UK, Literacy Partners US, Women in Journalism, and Reporters Without Borders to name just a few of the charities and not-for-profit organisations she served.

Throughout her career, Barbara made it her business to help writers to be successful. As part of her ambassador role for National Literacy Trust, she twice chaired the judges for The Sunday Times Write Stuff competition which encouraged the next generation of female fiction writers. She was very proud of the competition and very committed. I remember Barbara calling me about one of the entries written by a young teenage girl, so moved about the tale of a lost dog that it made her cry. She had got up at 5am to read through all the shortlisted entries and wrote notes about every single story ahead of a conference call to the London judging teams involved in the competition judging. That was Barbara to a tee.

Barbara gave generously. She waived royalties, donated fees, and contributed work freely. During the pandemic, she gifted one of her books so it could be adapted for blind readers and wrote a 25,000-word short story for a national newspaper when asked for just 5,000. In the interview which went alongside it, Barbara quoted her hero Winston Churchill, telling them to “KBO” (Keep Buggering On) and she did that throughout her own life.

When Barbara was in town, she really loved meeting editors and writers, and they loved meeting her. Proud of her roots as a journalist and passionate about supporting press freedom, she was refreshingly no-nonsense, consistently gave engaging interviews, and always left a lasting impression.

In 2019, she was guest of honour at a dinner at Corinthia London to mark her becoming the first Ambassador of Women in Journalism. Surrounded by Fleet Street’s finest female editors, Barbara captivated the room, sharing off-the-record anecdotes and inspiring many who credited her book A Woman of Substance with influencing their careers.

Despite her global success, Barbara remained grounded. She adored fish and chips with malt vinegar—a treat we enjoyed at the end of her annual book tours. I’d joke, “Look at us, two women from Yorkshire, living it up at The Dorchester,” and we’d share a laugh over a glass of her favourite Billecart-Salmon rosé champagne.

Another time, we threw a little family party at my home to celebrate Barbara and Bob’s 50th wedding anniversary and I asked Barbara what she’d most like to eat. I was thinking oysters, Dover sole, pink Billecart-Salmon champagne – all her favourites – but she replied: “Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding followed by Apple Crumble and custard!”

She loved my three daughters, and they loved her. One evening, while she was over for dinner, my youngest, Ruby, lost her first tooth and was excited about the tooth fairy’s impending visit. While she was asleep, we put a shiny £1 coin in the tooth jar, and Barbara added a touch of literary magic by penning a note from the US tooth fairy – whom she hilariously named Barbarella – and tucking in a crisp $50 bill in the envelope.

The last time I saw Barbara was in August in New York. Lively as ever, we discussed Richard III, Middlemarch, Taylor Swift, M&S nighties and Cadbury’s Fruit & Nut bars (one of her favourites). We had a great few hours and put the world to rights over a of glass of French rosé.

I’m devastated that Barbara’s own story has now come to an end but know her words and legacy will live on. Her novels remain as compelling and readable as ever, continuing to inspire and captivate readers around the world.

When asked what she would want on her epitaph, her reply was simple: “She made her dreams come true.” And she truly did.

25 November 2024: With the deepest and heartfelt sadness, it is confirmed that international bestselling author Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE has died.

Barbara, 91, died peacefully at her home yesterday (24 November 2024) following a short illness, and was surrounded by loved ones to the very end.

A prolific writer, Barbara published her iconic debut novel, A Woman of Substance, in 1979. It went from bestseller to super seller within its first year and stayed on the New York Times’ list for 43 weeks.

Barbara wrote a total of 40 novels during her phenomenal career, all of which became worldwide bestsellers. Her most recent, The Wonder of It All, was published in the UK and Commonwealth by HarperCollins (November 2023), and in the US by St Martin’s Press (December 2023).

Born and raised in Leeds, Barbara started writing fiction when she was just seven years old and sold her first short story to a magazine for seven shillings and sixpence when she was 10 years old. She left school aged 15 for the typing pool at the Yorkshire Evening Post. A year later, she became a reporter on the paper and, aged 18, its first woman’s editor. Aged 20, she moved to London and became a columnist and editor on Fleet Street.

In 1961, she met and fell in love with Hollywood film and television producer Robert Bradford. They were married in London on Christmas Eve, 1963, moved to New York in 1964, and remained together for 55 years until her beloved Bob died in July 2019. 2

Described as ‘the grand dame of blockbusters’, ‘Queen of the genre’, Barbara’s novels made her one of the most successful fiction writers in the world. More than 91 million copies of her books have been sold to date, published in more than 40 languages and in 90 countries.

Ten of her books have been made into TV films or drama series by her husband, Robert Bradford. One of the most notable was the TV adaptation of A Woman of Substance starring Jenny Seagrove and Liam Neeson which became a global hit and secured two Emmy awards nominations. When it premiered on Channel 4 in the UK in 1985, it attracted 13.8 million viewers, setting a record for the channel with its highest-ever audience.

During her career, Barbara was awarded five Honorary Doctorates of Letters from several institutions including the University of Leeds, Yorkshire; the University of Bradford, Yorkshire; Teikyo Post University, Connecticut; Siena College, Loudonville, New York; and Mount Saint Mary College, Newburgh, New York.

Barbara was an ambassador for the National Literacy Trust in the UK and served on the Board of Literacy Partners in the US for six years. In 2007, she was awarded an OBE for her services to literature by HM The Queen at Buckingham Palace.

In one of the many interviews that she conducted during her remarkable life, Barbara was recently asked what would be on her epitaph. Barbara replied: “She made her dreams come true.”

A storyteller of substance, Barbara was greatly admired, much loved and will be dearly missed by her family, friends, and fans around the world.

Charlie Redmayne, CEO of HarperCollins, said: “Barbara Taylor Bradford was a truly exceptional writer whose first book, the international bestseller A Woman of Substance changed the lives of so many who read it – and still does to this day. She was a natural storyteller, deeply proud of her Yorkshire roots – she would regale us of her time working on the Yorkshire Evening Post with fellow reporter Keith Waterhouse and trainee photographer Peter O’Toole, the dawn of the Soho café society, and the many happy years shared with the love of her life, her husband, Bob. For 45 years, she was a huge part of our company and a great, great friend – we will miss her so much – but there is some solace in the knowledge that she is now, once again, alongside her beloved Bob. A life well-lived….”

Lynne Drew, Barbara’s long-term publisher and editor at HarperCollins, said: “Working with a storyteller as remarkable as Barbara for over 20 years was a huge privilege but also a huge amount of fun. Perennially curious, interested in everyone and extraordinarily driven, she loved writing and the conversations we had about her characters were unfailingly the best hours of my week. Dominating the bestseller lists, she broke new ground with her sweeping epic novels spanning generations, novels which were resolutely not romances, and she epitomised the woman of substance she created, particularly with her ruthless work ethic. She was an inspiration for millions of readers and countless writers. I’m so proud to have been her publisher for over 20 years – working with her has been one of the great thrills of my career, and I and everyone at HarperCollins will miss her greatly.”

Jennifer Enderlin, President and Publisher of St. Martin’s Press, said: “I have worked with Barbara Taylor Bradford as her US Publisher and Editor for almost 25 years. She was a legend in so many ways, but chief among them was her utmost professionalism and dedication to her craft. She never missed a deadline and if she said she was going to deliver her book on a Thursday, that’s when it would arrive. Before she embarked on a new novel, we would invariably have a delicious lunch at one of her favourite spots: La Grenouille or Doubles in the Sherry Netherland hotel. And there, we would discuss the plot, the “what ifs” of the book, and the arcs of the various characters. We would always have a glass or two of champagne, as Barbara said 3

it stimulated creativity. She truly loved writing and creating her unforgettable worlds – whether that world was Yorkshire at the turn of the 20th century, or the glamorous watering holes of London in the present day. Barbara’s novels would always transport you. She was the definition of A Woman of Substance.”

Actress Jenny Seagrove, who starred as Emma Harte in the tv adaptation of A Woman of Substance, said: “It’s 1984 and I am about to meet the world-famous legend that is Barbara Taylor Bradford. I have starred in a mini-series made of her bestselling novel A Woman of Substance and it really matters to me that she is pleased. I am a young actress and very nervous.

“The door opens and all I can say is that a powerhouse of glamour and warmth heads towards me, grabs me, hugs me, and says… ‘You are my Emma Harte’. And that was the start of a long friendship with the force of nature that I am proud to call my friend – Barbara Taylor Bradford.

“We saw each other whenever she and her beloved Bob were in London. I did Hold the Dream for them as another miniseries.

“We shared dog stories -we are both besotted – and talked about everything under the sun. She never changed. Success never diluted her warmth and humour or her ability to relate to everyone she met, whether a cleaner or a princess. She never, ever forgot that she was just a girl from Yorkshire that worked hard and made good. RIP dear friend.”

A digital tribute book has been created for those who wish to pay tribute to Barbara Taylor Bradford OBE and can be accessed here:

As a jewellery historian, jewellery editor at British Vogue, and now podcast host, Carol Woolton is uniquely qualified to take readers on a whistlestop tour through the fascinating histories of hoops, rings, beads, charms, brooches, cuffs and head ornaments.

Weaving in examples from cultures around the world, Carol will uncover incredible stories about Viking silver torques, Imperial jade in China, sixteenth-century Posy rings, organic gems, snake motifs, Roman cameo carving, Hindu wedding jewellery, Etruscan gold, Ancient Greek coins, piercings, wedding pigs in China, tiaras and anklets – to name but a few.
